Wellness Exam Q & A

What is a wellness exam?

A wellness exam assesses your health. You don’t need to be sick or experiencing symptoms to benefit. In fact, the CAHEP team recommends everyone schedule an annual wellness exam, regardless of age.

During the appointment, your provider:

  • Checks for possible diseases
  • Identifies issues that might become health problems in the future
  • Updates necessary immunizations
  • Asks about your diet and exercise routine

Your provider may also order sex-specific preventive screenings or lab testing, depending on your age and health history.

How do I prepare for a wellness exam?

To get the most out of your annual wellness exam, it’s crucial to prepare in advance. Make sure to gather the following information before visiting CAHEP:

  • List of the medications, supplements, and vitamins you take
  • Results from recent or relevant lab screens or medical tests
  • Names and contact info of doctors or specialists you’ve seen recently
  • Questions you’d like answered
  • Health insurance information (if you have it)
  • List of the symptoms or pain you’re experiencing

If English isn’t your first language, make sure to let the team know in advance. The on-staff providers speak more than 40 languages and can provide translation services during your visit for a small fee.

What happens during a wellness exam?

At CAHEP, a wellness exam includes the following steps:

Step 1 - Discussion of your lifestyle

Your provider asks about your lifestyle, including if you use tobacco or drink alcohol. Then, they inquire about your diet and exercise regimen.

Step 2 - Check your vital signs

Next, your provider checks your vital signs. They listen to your heartbeat and respiratory rate and weigh and measure you.

Step 3 - Physical exam

Your CAHEP provider examines your skin, looking for abnormal moles or growths. They ask you to lie down on your back and gently palpate your abdomen, checking the location and size of your internal organs.

Depending on your age, the team may recommend sex-specific screenings, like a Pap smear or a prostate exam.

Step 4 - Immunizations

If necessary, your provider updates your immunizations. Immunizations (or vaccines) train your immune system to fend off harmful invaders, like viruses and bacteria.

Step 5 - Prescription medication and referrals

Lastly, your provider refills your prescriptions (if you take any). If you have a chronic medical condition, like cancer, that requires more personalized care, they can refer you to a specialist in the area.
